VESF Consulting Scientist, Dr. Mary G. Altalo

Dr. Altalo comes to VESF with a wealth of experience in estuarine and marine environments (red tides/ocean observation systems) as well as in science administration. She received her B.A. in Environmental Science from Smith College and her Ph.D. in Biology from the Johns Hopkins University. She has held research and faculty appointments at the Johns Hopkins University, University of Delaware, and the London School of Economics. She served as Deputy Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Associate Vice Chancellor for Marine Science at the University of California, San Diego. She was Program Director/Manager for biological oceanography at the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation, and served as Director of the Inter-agency Planning Office for Ocean Observations- Ocean.US- in Washington, DC. Mary has also had extensive business experience as Corporate Vice president of SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation) and worked on Environmental Systems at Martin Marietta and Versar, Inc.  In addition to her Ph.D. in Biology, she holds a Masters of Divinity and is committed to the field of environmental justice.
